Sailor Moon is the main heroine of the show and is the leader of the Senshi. She makes her first appearance in Sailormoon episode #1. Though a klutzy, ditzy girl who whines a lot and tends to be cowardly, Tsukino Usagi is destined to greatness. She is the most compassionate and caring of all the Senshi, and never fails to believe in her comrades in times of need. As her role as a super heroine, she transcends to differents levels within her life: Sailor Moon, Super Sailor Moon and finally Eternal Sailor Moon. These are not her only transitions, she also learns that she is the Moon Princess and in the future becomes Neo-Queen Serenity. This is a big responsibility for a young girl and at times she is very reluctant to accept her destiny. Arguably, Sailor Moon is the most powerful of the Senshi and is the keeper of the Maboroshi no Ginzuishou (The Illusion Silver Crystal), along with other magical items. Nonetheless, the Senshi protect her because she is the Moon Princess and will be the future Queen of Crystal Tokyo. As time goes on, through her experience, training and personal growth, Usagi becomes more comfortable with her role as Sailor Moon and becomes more mature. Tsukino Usagi lives in a house in Minato-ku (Tokyo, Japan) with her family: Tsukino Kenji (father), Tsukino Ikuko (mother) and Tsukino Shingo (little brother). Her parents are caring and loving to both Usagi and her brother. But they can be strict on Usagi at times, like when it comes to her grades in school, they only want the best for her. Usagi and Shingo have a relationship like most siblings do; they are forever picking on each other, but despite their fighting and teasing, they do care for each other. Before she learns of her destiny, she lives a normal life just like any other teenager. She is attending Juuban Junior High School, second year, class 1, when she is first introduced in the series, then later in the series she graduates to Juuban High School. School is not one of Usagi's strong points and she tends to get sidetracked from her studies easily. She is often late, gets low grades and would rather be doing other fun things instead of school. Mathematics and English are her least favorite subjects, but she does enjoy home economics. Usagi's interest are typical for a teenager, she loves to play video games, go shopping with her friends and read mangas (comics). She also enjoys eating and she will eat a lot. There isn't much that she doesn't like, but one food she is said to dislike is carrots. She is klutzy and a crybaby but tries to do her best. She has a hard time staying focused on the important matters at times, but in the end she always pulls through with the help of her good friends. In her past life, Usagi was Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom during the Silver Millenium. It was a peaceful time during the Silver Millenium, that is until an evil force known as the Dark Kingdom came to destory the Moon Kingdom in hopes of gaining control of the Universe. They did indeed manage to destroy the Moon Kingdom with a massive attack, but in the end Queen Serenity, her mother from the Silver Millenium, was able to defeat the Dark Kingdom. She used the remaining energy she had to summon what bit of power that remained in the ginzuishou. With that power of the ginzuishou, she was able to trap the seven evil warriors that worked for the Dark Kingdom. By doing this, the Ginzuishou was shattered into seven pieces forming the Nijizuishou (Seven rainbow crystals), each one containing one of the evil warrior's spirits within. Sacrificing her life and what was left of her Kingdom, Queen Serenity sent her daughter, Princess Serenity, Prince Endymion, the Senshi and many others of the Silver Millenium to another life to be reborn in hopes they would have a happier life. She also sent her two cat advisors, Luna and Artemis, who were instructed to be the guardians of the Moon Princess and the Senshi. Should the need arise, Luna and Artemis would know what to do to help get the Senshi ready to defend their world. In the future to come, Usagi will be Neo-Queen Serenity of Crystal Tokyo. Her and King Endymion (Mamoru) rule Earth side by side. Also, they both have a daughter and name her after Usagi, but they call Chibi-usa as a nickname. Chibi-usa is sent back through time by Sailor Pluto to find the Ginzuishou and to be protected by Sailor Moon and the Senshi/Scouts. Chibi-usa's grand entrance, was her falling out of the sky and landing on Usagi's head during a special moment with Mamoru. Instantly, Mamoru and Chibi-usa have a unique bond and connection to each other, by they don't understand why. This drives Usagi crazy and she gets very jealous of Chibi-usa because she doesn't understand what is going on. In the beginning, Usagi and Chibi-usa don't get along to well, perhaps its because they are both so much alike. To Usagi, Chibi-usa is just a spoiled little brat who getting in between her and Mamoru. For a while they all don't know that Usagi and Mamoru are the future parents of Chibi-usa. But after time, a bond of love grows between Usagi and Chibi-usa and Usagi will do anything to protect her. And this is how the adventures of Sailormoon begin. Usagi, late as usual is on her way to school when she notices a group of kids picking on a black cat. Instantly Usagi goes to help and chases off the kids. She picks up the cat to comfort her and then removes a bandaid from the cat's forehead, revealing a yellow crescent moon. The black cat, who is Luna, leaps from Usagi's arms and is still shaken from the whole ordeal. Realizing the time, Usagi hurries off to school leaving Luna there to wonder if Usagi is the one she is looking for. Luna trails Usagi, watching her from a distance until she decides Usagi is one of the Senshi. Later that evening after school, Usagi is laying on her bed resting when Luna sneaks into her room through her window. Usagi gets startled by the cat, then flips out when she learns that Luna is able to talk to her. Luna tells Usagi that she was been searching for her, that she is Sailor Moon and its her desinty. At first Usagi doesn't believe it. Luna gives her a beautiful magical brooch that transforms her into Sailor Moon. Usagi is very reluctant in her role as Sailor Moon and is unsure of herself, but Luna helps her, giving her guidance and advice. Usagi is normally cheerful, sunny and outgoing, but is known to have mood swings. She is an emotional person which happens to be a cancer-like trait. Because her heart is so big, she can get her feelings hurt badly. One of Usagi's strongest assets is being a loyal friend and her love for all life. She truly cares for everyone and even more so for her family and friends. Usagi will often sacrifice her own needs for others. If someone is in trouble she will put her own life on the line to help them. Usagi has a knack for making friends with just about anyone, perhaps it's the aura of love and friendship that surrounds her. She is a good listener and will do her best to offer advice when she is able. She isn't afraid to speak up, but will sometimes speak without thinking first. Usagi is a hopeless romantic who daydreams about the guys she has crushes on. Her first crush that we become aware of is on Furuhata Motoki, the manager of Crown Game Center. Then she develops a crush on Tuxedo Kamen after their first meeting. In the beginning, she is not aware that Tuxedo Kamen is really Chiba Mamoru. In the anime (Sailormoon the first season), Usagi and Mamoru don't get along too well at first. Mamoru comes off being rude and mean to Usagi. He sees her as a young kid and teases her. Mamoru gives her the nickname O-Dango-Atama because of her unique hair style, which Usagi can't stand at first, but later in the series it becomes a name of endearment and is used by others. As time goes on, a fondness grows between them. Their relationship together doesn't take place until they both learn their secret identity and about their past lives. In the manga it is different, Usagi and Mamoru grow to care for each other almost at the start. In Sailormoon R the second season, due to having everyone's memories wiped after defeating the Dark Kingdom, Usagi gets a crush on Tsukikage no Knight, who once again is Mamoru, but is his spirit self. But after she regains her memory, she knows that Mamoru is her true love. Throughout the series, Usagi will have her crushes here and there, but her heart always remains true to Mamoru. Being couragous is not Usagi's strong suit. At first she will linger back being overwhelmed by whatever situation she may be in. It takes her a moment to work up her nerve and courage, but once she does, she will not back down. And if it's a friend is in need, she doesn't even hesitate to aid them. Usagi's powers tend to come from her magical brooch, the Ginzuishou and other magical items she has, unlike the other Senshi. The others are perceived to have the power within them once they transform. Being the Moon Princess, she is very attuned with the moon and if you look deeper into Usagi, you will notice that there is something about her that is almost mysterious. She has a certain amount of empathy about her. She can sense what a person is feeling whether it be happy or sad. She is not able to read minds or anything like that, but maybe this gift is what makes her such a good listener. She can also find the good in someone when no else can and even sometimes help them to find it in themselves. This could get her into trouble and has at times. Because she is able to see that little bit of good, she can be too trusting and giving. Even though she can see it, the others may not see it within themselves and use her trust against her. Usagi is not one to be alone, she likes being with her friends. It's almost like she has a need to be around people and needs to be liked and loved. One of her closest and best friends since childhood is Naru. They remain close friends throughout the series and many times Usagi is coming to Naru's aid as Sailormoon. Naru never learns that Sailor Moon is really Usagi. They both go to the same school along with Umino Gurio, who has a crush on Usagi. But Usagi is not interested in him except as a friend. When Usagi meets the other Senshi, a strong bond of friendship is formed. They have their fights from time to time. Usagi and Rei are forever picking on each other and sometimes seem like they are sisters. Usagi isn't close to the Outer Senshi like she is with the Inner, she holds a high respect for them, the exception to this is Hotaru who she is more affectionate to. Just like any of the other Senshi/Scouts, Usagi has her flaws. The one she is most known for is her crying and whining. As mentioned before, she is a very emotional person and can take things to heart. Klutzing out is yet another one of her traits, but in the manga, she doesn't seem to be us much of a klutz as she is in the anime. Usagi has a tendency of going through phases of things she wants to do or likes. Some examples are: wanting to be a singing star, going on a diet, practicing to be a Princess and studying more to make Mamoru proud of her. This is normal for teenagers, but Usagi tends to take it to extremes at times and eventually she will lose interest and move onto something else never finishing what she started. She doesn't do this all the time, but does enough that Luna and the others notice it and later in the series it is mentioned. In the manga, Usagi is protray a bit more aloof and doesn't seem to be as goofy acting as she is in the anime. |

The Bunnies on You! |
|
Usagi is known by many different names and some of them have a meaning behind them. In most cases, except for a few and we will mention those, all of her names relate in one way or another to the moon. In Japanese, Usagi means 'rabbit and Tsukino means 'of the moon'. Like we mentioned before, there is an Asian legend of the 'rabbit on the moon'. Tsuki is the Japanese character (letter) for the moon and it appears in the Japanese word 'getsuyo-bi' (monday). In Japanese, Monday is known as 'Moonday'. Her North American name, Serena, also relates to the moon. It is derived from Usagi's Japanese name as a princess, Serenity or Selenity, which can be spelled either way. There isn't a distinction between the sounds of 'l' and 'r' in the Japanese language. There are two origins to this name. The first is the reference to the Sea of Serenity on the moon. In the manga (volume 3), it states that the ruins of the Moon Kingdom are located there. The second reference is to Selene, the Greek Moon Goddess. The mythology behind this is that she loved Endymion, which happens to be the name of Mamoru as a Prince and later the King. This reference was lost in the North American dub, because they call him Prince Darien. Odango atama is a nickname that was first given to her by Mamoru due to her unique hair style. It translates to 'dumpling head'. Odango's are a Japanese delicacy and since the North American's don't have them, they translated that nickname into 'Meatball Head'. Later in the series once Mamoru and Usagi are a couple, he calls her Usako, which is used as a term of endearment. 'Usa' is a shorted version of Usagi and 'ko' in Japanese means child or baby. |

| Moon Prism Power, Make Up! (North American Name: Moon Prism Power) |
This transformation was first used in episode #1 when Luna gives Usagi a magical
brooch/locket. Normally she wears it on the front of her bow, but sometimes keeps
it in her pocket. When she is ready to transform, she will thrust her arm up into
the air while holding the brooch and shout, "Moon Prism Power, Make Up!" Then, she
will transform to Sailor Moon. First, she gets her nails done. After blinking her
eyes twice, beams of light shoot out from the brooch. They form the top part of
her suit, then the white gloves, then the red boots, and finally the blue skirt.
Then, the crescent moon on her head begins to glow (The crescent moon doesn't
appear in episode #1). She spins fully around, and her tiara appears, followed by
the brooches in her hair. Finally, she strikes her pose, facing forward, legs
shoulder width apart, left arm at her waist, right hand to her forehead, saluting
the Moon. A white crescent moon is in the background.
|
| Crying/Whining Attack |
Both Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon are able to use this attack and have sometimes
used it together. When they are really upset and cry, their wailing is so intense it
will distract their enemy.
|
| Moon power.... ni nare! (North American Name: Disguise Power, change me into _______) |
This transformation is used mainly in the first season by Usagi and is used with the
Henshin Stick (North American name: Luna Pen) that Luna gives to her in episode #3
(North American episode #2). It allows her to transform herself into different
disguises. She is only supposed to use it for Senshi/Scout business, but on occasions
has used it for her own personal use, like when she disguises herself as a fortune teller
and tries to play match-maker with Rei and Kumada Yuuichirou (North American name:
Chad). Usagi does use it once in the second season, episode #52 (North American
episode #46) and Sailor Venus does use the Henshin Stick and this transformation to
disguise herself as Sailor Moon later in the series to fool the enemy. Usagi holds
the Henshin Stick in the air, and shouts, "Moon power.... ni nare!", followed by
whatever she wants to transform into. Then, beams of light shoot from the Henshin
Stick, surround Usagi, and create the disguise. Here's a list of disguises Usagi has used. Episode #3 (NA episode #2) - "A sophisticated talent agent" Episode #6 (not shown in NA) - A rock singer Episode #8 (NA episode #5) - "A school superintendent" Episode #10 (NA episode #7) - "A flight attendant...or something" Episode #12 (NA episode #9) - "A sporty-looking photographer" Episode #16 (NA episode #13) - "A totally gorgeous bride, like in the magazines" Episode #22 (NA episode #18) - "The foxiest Fem around" Episode #30 (NA episode #26) - "Fortune-Teller/Matchmaker" Episode #52 (NA episode #46) - "A wicked-cool kindergarten teacher" |
| Moon Tiara Action (North American name: Moon Tiara Magic) |
This is one of Sailor Moon's main attacks in the first season. She uses the magic
of her tiara, turning into a frisbee/discus and throws it at her opponent. Depending
on her goal, she can turn them into moon dust or
trap them with the tiara. Most of the time this attack works, but there are a few
exceptions. Jadeite was too powerful for this attack, as was Nephrite's 'Leo the Lion'
youma (demon). And once again, this attack proved to be two weak for Ail and Ann's
cardians. Sailor Moon takes the tiara from around her forehead, and holds it in her
hand. As it glows, she spins around (to power it up). Then, she winds up, and
throws it, just like a frisbee, and shouts "Moon Tiara Action!" This attack does
appear a couple of times in the second season and she also used it in the movie
Sailormoon SuperS.
|
| Moon Tiara Stardust |
| This attack was used only once in episode #5 and wasn't added in the North American dub. Using this attack was much like Moon Tiara Action, except this time instead of hitting the opponent, it sprinkles stardust on a group of zombies returning them back to normal people. |
| Sailor Moon Kick |
| During this attack, she shouts out 'Sailor Moon Kick' when she is kicking her opponent. She only does this in the original series, the North American dub doesn't have her saying anything when she kicks her opponent. |
| Moon Healing Escalation (North American names: Moon Healing Activation, Cosmic Moon Power, Moon Crystal Healing Power) |
This attack is used with the 'Moon Stick' (North American name: Crescent Moon Wand) to
heal people and was given to her by Luna in episode #25 (North America episode #21)
to heal the the people Zoisite has turn into youmas (demons). She restored Tuxedo
Kamen's memory with this attack, but he was recaptured by Queen Beryl soon after.
Sailor Moon takes out the 'Moon Stick', and holds it up to her face. A red light in
the center of the wand begins to glow. Then, she moves the wand in a circle, while
saying "Moon Healing Escalation!" The youmas scream in pain, and then revert back
to their human form. In the North American dub, they have three names for this attack.
The other two are used once Sailor Moon receives the Maboroshi no Ginzuishou (The
Illusion Silver Crystal) and this makes this attack even more powerful. Sailor Moon
(or Princess Serena) takes out the 'Moon Stick', and holds it up in the air. Beams of
energy shoot out in all directions from the Ginzuishou (North American name: Imperium
Silver Crystal). A shield of energy forms around her, as the power of the crystal
repels the evil forces nearby and destroys her opponent. 'Cosmic Moon Power' is first
seen in the North American dub, episode #31. Using the 'Moon Stick' with the Ginzuishou
is how Sailor Moon destroys Kunzite (North American name: Malachite). 'Moon Crystal
Healing Activation' is first used in the North American dub, episode #63. Sailor Moon
uses this attack to heal the Ayakashi Sisters (North American name: Four Sisters) by
destroying all the negative energy that is within them. But this time she doesn't
use the Moon Stick, she uses just the Ginzuishou. Sailor Moon holds the Ginzuishou
in the air, and says, "Moon Crystal Healing Activation!" Then, the target of the
power infusion begins to spin around, as the light engulfs them. The light clears,
and the evil disappears. In the North American dub, episode #64, the words 'Moon
Crystal Healing Power' were used.
|
| SAILORMOON R |
| Moon Crystal Power, Make Up! (North American Name: Moon Crystal Power!, Moon Star Power!) |
This is Usagi's second transformation and was first used in episode #51 (North American
episode #45). Sailor Moon was defeated by one of Ail's and Ann's cardians. The cardian
shattered her brooch, and then Usagi disappears into another dimension. In her mind,
Queen Serenity's spirit helps her out by giving her back the Ginzuishou (North
American name: Imperium Silver Crystal) and puts it in Usagi's broken brooch.
This repairs and improves her brooch making it more powerful, but the Ginzuishou
still has not regained all its power. In the North American dub, they mainly
use 'Moon Crystal Power', but there are occasions that they use 'Moon Star Power'
Usagi takes the brooch in her hands, and holds it in the air, shouting, "Moon Crystal
Power, Make Up!" She puts the brooch on her chest, and spins around a few times.
Then, the crystal shoots out beams of energy which form a pair of wings and the top
part of her suit. The wings spread out and disappear. She puts her arms into the air,
and her gloves are formed. Then her red boots are formed, followed by her skirt. She
spins around one time, as a ribbon ties itself onto the back of her skirt. Her tiara
appears, followed by the brooches in her hair. Finally, she striks her pose, facing
forward, legs shoulder width apart, left arm at her waist, right hand to her forehead,
saluting the Moon. A large white crescent moon with red rose is on it, is in the
background.
|
| Moon Princess Halation (North American Name: Moon Scepter Elimination) |
This attack is used with 'Cutie Moon Rod' (North American Name: Moon Sceptre) and
was first used in episode #51 (North American episode #45). The spirit of Queen
Serenity gives her the 'Cutie Moon Rod' as her new weapon and tells her how to
use it. Sailor Moon holds the 'Cutie Moon Rod' in the air. A full moon is in the
background. Beams of light come out from the top of the 'Cutie Moon Rod'. She spins
around once, swinging it in the air. Then she freezes, and holds the 'Cutie Moon
Rod' horizontally across her face. She swings the sceptre a few more times, saying
"Moon Princess...." Then she stands with her legs together, and points the 'Cutie
Moon Rod' at her opponent, and says, "...Halation!" Crescents and beams of energy
shoot toward the enemy.
|
| Sailor Body Attack! |
| This attack is used only in the original series and was first used in episode #60. She shouts out, "Sailor Body Attack" as she throws her body at her opponent. In the North American dub, when Sailor Moon is attacking Cooan (North American name: Catzi), she says, "Showtime's over, pancake face!" instead of using 'Sailor Body Attack'. |
| SAILORMOON S |
| Moon Cosmic Power, Make Up! |
This is Usagi's third transformation and was first used in episode #91. Usagi's
brooch quits working for a time, but is restored and made more powerful by the
love that Usagi and Mamoru have for each other.
|
| Moon Spiral Heart Attack |
This attack is used with the 'Spiral Heart Moon Rod' and was first used in
episode #91. Sailor Moon would do some fancy moves and spins, then shouts,
"Moon Spiral Heart Attack". The 'Spiral Heart Moon Rod' would shoot out a spiral
of energy at her opponent and destroy the Daimons. Eventually this attack wasn't
strong enough to defeat the more powerful daimons and other opponents.
|
| Double Sailor Moon Kick |
| This attack is used in a joint effort with Sailor Chibi Moon and was first used in episode #107. |
| Crisis, Make Up! |
This is a double transformation that transforms Sailor Moon into Super Sailor Moon
and was first used in episode #112. She can only do this if she is already in her
Sailor Moon mode and has to use the Holy Grail. In the beginning, this exhausts
Sailor Moon greatly.
|
| Rainbow Moon Heart Ache |
This attack is much like the 'Moon Spiral Heart Attack' and was first used in
episode #122. The difference is that instead of the spiraling energy, it creates
a huge heart that smashes into her opponents and destroys them. It is also more
powerful.
|
| SAILORMOON SUPERS |
| Moon Crisis, Make Up! |
This is a transformation that is done together with Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi
Moon and it transforms them into Super Sailor Moon and Super Chibi Moon. Sailor
Moon was no longer able to transform into Super Sailor Moon, because the Holy
Grail was destroyed. But Pegasus gave the power to both of them.
|
| Moon Gorgeous Meditation |
This attack is used with the 'Kaleid Moon Scope' and was first used in Sailormoon
SuperS. After doing some fancy moves, Super Sailor Moon shouts, "Moon Gorgeous Meditation"
and blasts her opponent. During this attack you are able to see different views of
Super Sailor Moon while using the attack. In the movie Sailormoon SuperS, Super
Sailor Moon and Super Sailor Chibi Moon use this attack together.
|
| SAILORMOON SAILORSTARS |
| Moon Eternal, Make Up! |
This is Usagi's transformation that transforms her into Eternal Sailor Moon and was
first used in the beginning of the fifth season. At first, Usagi isn't able to use
this transformation until after she had transformed into Super Sailor Moon and had
gotten all the other Senshi to combine their powers. However later in the series,
Usagi's brooch for Eternal Sailor Moon is created and she is able to transform on her
own.
|
| Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss |
This attack is used with the 'Eternal Moon Tier' and was first used in episode #173.
Eternal Sailor Moon doesn't do lots of fancy moves in this attack like she does in
others.
|
| Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss |
| This attack is used with the 'Eternal Moon Tier' as well and was first used in episode #187. Chibi Chibi Moon gives the 'Eternal Moon Tier' an upgrade making this attack more powerful. |
| SAILORMOON MANGA |
| Moon Frisbee |
| This attack is the equivalent of 'Moon Tiara Action' except she shouts, "Moon Frisbee". |
| Moon Twilight Flash |
| This attack was used to destroy Nephrite's shadow demon. The moonlight shines down on Sailor Moon and then she directs the moonlight through the jewel on her tiara. The beam of moonlight then destroys the opponent. |
| Silver Moon Crystal Power, Make Up! |
| This transformation is the equivalent of 'Moon Eternal, Make Up!' and transforms Usagi into Eternal Sailor Moon. |
| One of the phrases Sailor Moon is most known for saying is 'Ai to seigi no seeraafuku no bishoujo senshi Sailormoon! Tsuki ni kawatte oshioki yo!'. The translation for this is 'I am the pretty sailor-suited soldier of love and justice, Sailormoon! In the name of the moon, I'll teach you!'. However, ususally it gets translated as 'For love and justice, I am the pretty sailor-suited soldier, Sailormoon! In the name of the moon, I will punish you!'. In the North American dub it is worded differently and Sailor Moon says 'I am Sailor Moon, champion of justice! On behalf of the moon, I will right wrongs and triumph over evil, and that means you!'. Another phrase that Sailor Moon says is 'Tsuki no hikari wa ai no message...' which means 'The Moonlight is the message of love...'. This phrase is used after the previews for the next episode. |
