Kanji (written characters derived from Chinese) is used in the Japanese
language for the Japanese equivalent of root words. Each of the Senshi/Scouts
and Tuxedo Kamen/Mask contain the same kanji as the corresponding planet within
their Japanese family name, but they not necessarily pronounced the same. The
kanji used in the Japanese names of the planets include the five Asian elements
(fire, water, wood, metal, earth). Also, the days of the week include the kanji
for the element, thus making the planets, elements and days of the week related.
So the Senshi/Sailor Scouts and Tuxedo Kamen/Mask could easily be considered as
an elemental team, even though Saturn is normally considered as the
representative of the element of earth.
The Senshi/Sailor Scouts attacks normally have the kanji associated with the
planet. (Example: Sailor Mars=Her planet is Mars...and the kanji for this planet
is fire. All of her attacks are fire related.) The exception to this is Sailor
Venus, she was named before Takeuchi Naoko started the naming pattern. Within
her name is the kanji meaning 'love', associated with Venus; the Goddess of
Love. But later her attacks do involve metal and the Japanese name for Venus
does use the kanji for 'metal'. In the anime, Sailor Jupiter's attacks are
associated with the god Jupiter, but in the manga her attacks are associated
with wood.
